Machining: Generally considered to be the first “free machining” stainless, Stainless Steel 416 can be easily turned, tapped, broached, drilled, reamed, threaded and milled per various machine manufacturers’ recommendations for various suitable tool speeds, feeds and types.

Primary Elements: The composition of Stainless Steel 416 includes small or trace amounts of carbon, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, silicon and sulphur, between 12 to 14 percent chromium, with the balance being iron.

Features: Stainless Steel grade 416 is a highly machineable stainless steel; the improved machinability is achieved by the addition of phosphorus and sulfur to the alloy composition.

Stainless Steel 416 is a martensitic grade of stainless steel. Martensitic stainless steels were designed as a type of stainless steel alloy that could be hardened by heat treatment and would be corrosion resistant – although not as corrosion resistant as austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. Stainless Steel 416 is highly machineable and is known for being wear resistant. Along with excellent machinability, other characteristics of Stainless Steel 416 include non-seizing and non-galling properties, resistant to mild corrosive environments such as petroleum products, organic materials, numerous mild acids, steam and fresh water, and having reasonable strength in the tempered and hardened state. Stainless Steel Grade 416 is also magnetic in all conditions.

National Specialty Alloys, Inc. carries martensitic Stainless Steel grade 416 in stainless steel square bar, stainless steel hexagon bar, and stainless steel round bar per the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Specification A-582 from ½” to 14” in diameter, and ASTM Heat Treated 255-302 Brinell Hardness Number (BHN), stress relieved, from 1” to 8-1/2” in diameter.
