Duplex Stainless Steel is a combination of ferritic and austenitic compositions, resulting in excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and greater strength.

History: Duplex Stainless Steel was first created over 70 years ago in Sweden for use in the paper industry. Originally developed to fight corrosion difficulties caused by chemical process solutions and cooling waters where chloride was present, Duplex Stainless Steels are roughly equal amounts of ferritic and austenitic compositions. The first generation Duplex Steel was an alloy comprised of Chromium, Molybdenum and Nickel (with the balance being Iron). This early Duplex Stainless Steel delivered good performance qualities, but the welds were of low toughness because of too much ferrite - this limited Duplex Stainless Steel use to just a few purposes.

In the 1970s, the second generation of Duplex Stainless Steel was developed, at about the same time as the proliferation of gas and oil fields in the North Sea. By adding Nitrogen as an alloying agent to Duplex Stainless Steel, this provided outstanding resistance to chloride corrosion as well as improved sturdiness in the heat-affected areas of welds. With this marked improvement, Duplex Stainless Steel became an extremely popular alloy - in fact, 80 percent of Duplex Stainless Steel used is of this type. Another benefit of this second generation Duplex Stainless Steel is cost - less expensive Nitrogen was added in place of the Nickel content, resulting in a cheaper Duplex Stainless Steel.
