Stainless Steel 317/317LThe design features and advantages of Stainless Steel grades 317 and 317L include increased strength and corrosion resistance (especially in harsh environments); higher tensile strength, stress-to-rupture and creep than other stainless steel grades; and, resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting, making 317L the cost-effective choice for use in a wide range of corrosive conditions. Specifically, both Stainless Steel grades 317 and 317L resist pitting in acetic and phosphoric acids. With respect to cold working of Stainless Steel grades 317 and 317L, stamping, shearing, drawing and heading can all be successfully performed. In addition, annealing can be performed on 317 and 317L between 1850 and 2050 Degrees Fahrenheit (1010 and 1121 Degrees Celsius), followed by rapid cooling. Furthermore, all common hot working methods are possible with Stainless Steel grades 317 and 317L, between 2100 and 2300 Degrees Fahrenheit (1149 and 1260 Degrees Celsius). Primary Elements: Grade 317 and 317L are alloys primarily comprised of between 18 and 20 percent Chromium, 11 to 15 percent Nickel, 3 to 4 percent Molybdenum, 2 percent Manganese, along with trace amounts of Carbon, Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon, with the balance being Iron. The significant difference between Stainless Steel grades 317 and 317L is that 317L is the extra low carbon variation of 317 for welded structures.
