Stainless Steel BarAt National Speciality Alloys, Inc. stainless steel bars are offered in a variety of alloys are in abundant supply. Nobody stocks more pump shaft quality stainless steal bars than NSA. Primary Elements: Stainless Steel, in its simplest form, is a ferrous alloy with a Chromium content. Usually, Stainless Steel contains more than 50 percent Iron and a minimum of 11 percent Chromium. The high oxidation resistance of Stainless Steel is attained with the addition of more than 12 percent Chromium. The Chromium establishes a layer of Chromium Oxide film on Stainless Steel when it is exposed to oxygen. The layer of Chromium Oxide is not visible - this is what keeps Stainless Steel shiny. The film is also impermeable to water and air, which protects the metal underneath it. Even if the surface of Stainless Steel is scratched, the chromium oxide layer rapidly reforms. Other elements can be added in the production of Stainless Steel, such as Aluminum, Nickel, Tungsten, Titanium, Molybdenum, Silicon, Copper, and Nitrogen. Three factors, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and physical properties, are generally used to choose a grade of Stainless Steel for a specific application. National Speciality Alloys Carries Stainless Steel Bar Bar Types Available: Stock Sizes: range from 1/2" to 8" in diameter in 12-28' random lengths. Custom sizes available upon request. History: Stainless Steel was invented in 1913 by English metallurgist Harry Brearley, who was researching ways to protect cannon barrels from corrosion. Initial commercial production of Stainless Steel began in August, 1913. Get the Right Answers Right Away! People make the difference at National Speciality Alloys, Inc.
